A group of Niagara residents have come together to celebrate one of the region’s most unique neighbourhoods, but they need some help doing it.

The Facer District Merchants and Residents Association is seeking cultural performance artists, retailers and food vendors for its inaugural Facer European Festival on Monday, Aug. 1 on Facer Street in St. Catharines. The event, which runs from noon to 9 p.m., is a fundraiser supporting the grassroots Beautify the Facer District Initiative that’s been spearheaded by the merchants and residents association to create a more welcoming neighbourhood with improved infrastructure and aesthetic touches.

This free, inclusive festival is a nod to the history of the neighbourhood, which was built by Polish, Italian, Ukrainian and other European immigrants who made the Facer District their home. Today, the neighbourhood, known unofficially as Little Europe, retains its rich, multicultural heritage with multilingual businesses, and diverse eateries, cultural centres and churches.

The Facer European Festival will feature entertainment on three stages, including performances by Grammy winner Walter Ostanek, and Grammy-nominated John Gora. There will also be folk dance performances on the street; historical neighbourhood tours; a kids’ zone featuring face-painting and Atlantis Inflatables; European cuisine; and plans to make and eat a 60-foot calzone — the world’s largest.

“We’re thrilled to host this festival and invite everyone in the region and beyond to see what a cultural gem the Facer District is,” says Henry Ostaszewicz, festival chair. “We have so much to offer festival-goers already when it comes to food and entertainment but we want to see Facer Street filled with performers, and food vendors serving cuisine that honours the traditions and cultures of Europe’s diverse nations.”

A vendor application and more information about the festival can be found at

The Facer District Merchants and Residents Association was formed to increase awareness of the Facer District’s history and its current activities; to support, promote and conduct nonpartisan educational, cultural, character restoration and informational activities of the Facer District.
